When to visit San Marino

The climate in San Marino is Mediterranean and a good destination to visit all year. In spring, it has wonderful weather with a maximum temperature of around 28 C. In summer, the weather is warm and bright, and the temperature is between 20 and 30 C. June and August have the highest temperatures. In July there are most festivals and events. Fall is the next best time to visit San Marino. The temperature is between 25 and 15 C. Winter is also full of festivals and events around Christmas. But the temperatures are around 5 C.

Very good wines are produced in San Marino, so there are a lot of varieties of wine in all restaurants and clubs in the country.

What to see in San Marino

Rocca Guaita (Guaita Fortress)

There are 3 fortresses around the city of San Marino. The oldest is the fortress of Rocca Guaita, made in the 11th century. It was used as a prison and rebuilt for different uses until, in the 15th century it gained the form we can see today. It is situated on a hill, so you will need to climb to get to it, but the tower is worth visiting for the panoramic view.

Monte Titano

Mount Titano has a great view because it is the highest point. The views can be beautiful, and you can see northwest up to Apennines and east – Rimini, and even the Adriatic to the Dalmatian coast.

There are three castles with the highest of them, Rocca Cesta. They are connected by a path – Passo Delle Streghe. In the lower path, there are kiosks for drinks, snacks and souvenirs. In the Rocca Cestra is a museum for weapons: knives and crossbows.

Piazza della Liberta and Palazzo Pubblico

Palazzo Pubblico is a Gothic Government House and has a square tower. The tower is designed by Azzuri. It is made of stones from Mount Titano. Piazza Della Liberta is one of the most interesting places because Guardie di Rocca switches guard with an interesting ceremony.

Basilica di San Marino

Basilica di San Marino was made in the 19th century in the Romanesque church. It is dedicated to St. Marinus. Interiorly is a basilica, has a long nave and two aisles. The altars are a pretty sight because of the paintings and statues. There is also a statue of St. Marinus.

Museo di Stato

Museo di Stato is a great museum, with a huge collection from the Neolithic Age, and also artifacts from Roman and Etruscan periods. The several collections include collections from the Egyptian period and also Byzantine icons, paintings from the 17 century, and antique coins from San Marino. The collection of over 5000 items was largely received from donors in the 19th century.

Museum of Curiosities

This museum is made of interesting objects and their inventions and also their stories. The objects are one of a kind and label the most interesting things used back in history. Also, there is a collection for unusual people. There is also an old Ford in which a ride to the museum is offered.

Wax Museum

There are over 100 wax figures in this museum. Each of them represents historical important people, and they are dressed by their period, and the scenario is also put in their period. In these scenes are shown Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, like they have a meeting. Pope John XXIII is shown next to Jacqueline Kennedy.

In this museum, some wax figures are shown with their inventions: Galileo with his telescope, Marconi with the telegraph and Da Vinci's painting.

Maranello Rosso Ferrari Museum

This museum is stationed at the bottom of Mount Titano, and has a collection of automobiles that are connected to life and history. There is also sport cars, cars from Formula 1, cars from important people.

San Francisco - Convent and Art Gallery

It was completed in 1400, and it is important for displayed art. This object that once was a church, is now a museum for different arts. The line of art is made of arts from Franciscan churches, which include paintings on canvas, furnishing and many others. They present the history and different influences on the order located in San Marino.

The part where the art gallery is positioned, is famous for the collections of paintings from the 16th century – paintings from Guercino, Raphael and Gerolamo. In the walls of this church is built a massive gate – Porta di San Francesco.

Castle Towns

Around the capital of San Marino, there are small villages on the peaks and they are surrounded by their own castles. This is a great view of San Marinos' countryside. They also have interesting histories. A fortress called Domagnano was build in mid 15th century and had a vital role in the war between San Marino and Malatesta.

Museum of Agricultural heritage

As a Museum of Agricultural heritage is the famous House of Fabrica, and it was finished in 1700. This museum is always restored and furnished to fully recreate the lives of the farmers in villages, and it preserves traditions and customs. The most interesting tools are hoes and sickles, tools, pots, flat irons, cradles, and many others.
