The Varkarola

Varkarola is a very famous festival which is held every summer in Corfu. It takes place the closest Saturday to august 11th. Traditional romantic songs from the late 19th/20th century are played during the celebration when the fireworks light up the sky. At the end of this festival, a boat is set on fire and there is a giant fireworks display to commemorate the burning of the Turkish naval fleet.

Pastitsada

This is a legendary dish which is considered as the trademark of the island. It is also known as Pastitsada. In Corfu, it is also considered as a traditional Sunday dinner. It consists of pasta which is basically topped with meat braised in a spicy tomato based sauce. Bourdeto

For preparing this delicious dish, different types of fishes are collected. Then these fishes are cooked with onion, red sweet and hot spicy pepper. Earlier, it was only a fisherman’s food but later chefs made this dish very spicy, soft and attractive to tourists. This is a traditional dish which now has a separate fan base in food industry of Corfu.

Sofrito

It is one of the most famous and traditional dishes of the island. It contains the tender cuts of beef that are lightly dredged in flour and then slowly sautéed in a flavorful sauce which is based on white wine. This dish is typically accompanied by rice, potatoes or crusty bread. It is a wonderful festive dish and also perfect for the holidays or for a feast.

Angelokastro

It is also known as Castle of Angelos or Castle of Angel. It is located in the northwestern part of Corfu island and is situated on the top of a rock formation, on a steep slope, 305 metres above the sea level. It is one of the very graceful castles in Greece. The panoramic view from the top of the castle is very magnificent when the weather is good. The whole island can be viewed from the castle’s top. It is also one of the oldest castles, as the site has been fortified since, at least, the 7th century. 

New Venetian Fortress

It is one of the beautiful and popular castles in Corfu. It is an architectural marvel of art built by the Venetians and the physical labour of the inhabitants from 1576-1645. It is built on the hill of St. Mark. There is a stone building at the top of the castle which was used for defence in the ancient times. Now it functions as the headquarters of Naval Station Corfu.
