Dusseldorf is the main city of Westphalia State in western Germany. The city is situated on the right side of the Rhine River. Dusseldorf is the main city of the Rhine –Ruhr area. The first writings are from around the 1200s, Dusseldorf actually means Village of the Dussel.
The biggest growth in the market and economy is in the period of production of iron and steel in the 1870s. Many buildings in this city were destroyed during World War 2. Some of the buildings repaired and some other were built.
It has a lot of historical monuments, but is also a town with a lot of new buildings.
You should visit Dusseldorf in spring and summer, because the temperatures are mild and days are longer. Early autumn is beautiful with the fall foliage, but the weather can be cold and rainy. Also, a good period to visit is in winter because of Christmas Markets and the Karneval. This Karneval is one of the most vivid events in Germany.
The coldest temperature is in January (3 C), and in July and August are the hottest months (19 C).
In the autumn there is a lot of grey and rain. And the weather is most pleasant in the summer.
The architecture in the city is made of different pieces, and all put in just several square kilometres. There are several interesting buildings in the city, and the most interesting are Frank O. Gehry Buildings (MedienHafen) and Kö-Bogen I and II (Königsallee). The most interesting skyscrapers are the Drei Scheiben, with its impressive 94 metres (built in 1960) and Schauspielhaus which is white and has a curved façade. Other buildings built in the same period as aforementioned 2 skyscrapers are Crash House, Tonhalle and Ehrenhof, and Wilhelm Marx House.
This city is one of the best cities to see with a car. But it is easier to go visit it on foot. If you want to get a car, you can rent a car, also there is a service for car-sharing (it has an app also). So you can opt out of a cheap way to travel with a car.
In this interesting city the most popular means of transportation is a bike, even in rain and snow conditions.
Dusseldorf has a large network consisting of trains, buses and trams and they are all part of Rhein Bahn (a company that provides low budget tickets). With only one card you can use all the services in the limit of the city.
The cost of living in Dusseldorf is around 1500 euros.
The average salary is around 3000 euros.
Citizens give an average 10 to 25% tip for the bill in restaurants. The tip depends on the satisfaction of the service and the percent can go even above 25% if the service was superb, or even less than 10% if the service was really bad.

This is the most interesting street, and it means King’s Avenue. This is the most modern street and a shopping place.
This is a long walk (built since 1800) and has very exclusive boutiques, designer stores, art galleries, cafes, bars etc.
On this street there are also luxury hotels, and some have patios on the roof – with wonderful views.
Rheinuferpromenade gives the opportunity to enjoy the riverside of the city. It was opened in 1997 and is used to hide one of the city’s roads. It has a lot of cafes, galleries, restaurants and shops, with the view of the Rhine.
This site is visited by locals and tourists all year. And it has great places to visit at night.
Schloss Benrath is a mansion in baroque style, and is 10 km away from the centre. The important features of this building is the interior, and its gardens and park. This object is a place of 3 great museums for different aspects of the 18th century. The main building is the Corps de Logis, and is meant to show the period of Benrath. The other museums are the Museum of Natural History and European Garden Art. There are also nice gardens from the Baroque style. Tours in English are also available.
The Old Town is well preserved and is a must see destination for tourists. The main part is the Marktplatz, where you can find the statue of Elector John William 2 and the Town Hall (Rathaus).
The part from the old castle is the Castle Tower. In this tower is situated a marine museum with items of the history of trade and building of ships.
In the Museum Herjens are more than 8 centuries old items of porcelain, ceramics and other items. Another important place to visit is St. Lambertus Church.
The new development is made in Neuer Zollhof – a great part with office buildings of Media Harbor (made by Frank Gerhy). It is made of 3 structures which were built in 1998. The objects are leaned towards the ground, defying gravity.
There is also the commercial harbour, and is composed of iron bollards, walls, cranes, rail tracks, and is considered as a historic place. On the top of this area is the telecommunication tower Rheinturm. This is an interesting place for visiting and having a meal in the restaurants that are nearby.
The above mentioned Rhine Tower is one of the most important places to visit. It is in the middle of the harbour and was constructed in 1981 (240 metres tall). The tower provides wonderful views of Dusseldorf. The tower can also be visited at night, and gives excellent views of the city.
There is also the wonderful sculpture Lichtzelt Pegel – the largest digital item. On the top is also a nice restaurant.
