Lufthansa

Lufthansa is a German airline and the largest German airline by fleet size, revenue, and a number of destinations. Founded in 1953, it has its corporate headquarters in Cologne and primary hubs at Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport. Lufthansa is one of four founding members of Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance with more than 27 member airlines.

Lufthansa operates four different business units: Lufthansa Passenger Airlines (LH), which includes all passenger services; Lufthansa Cargo; Lufthansa Technik; and Lufthansa Systems Engineering & Development. The airline is known for its high-quality service and has won numerous awards for its excellent customer service.

History

Lufthansa is the largest airline in Central Europe, the second-largest airline in Germany, and the 8th largest airline in Europe. It has been a member of the Star Alliance since 1997 but has also signed agreements with other airlines, such as Air Canada and Japan Airlines (JAL).

The company was founded in 1953 by former Luftwaffe pilots Hans Baur, who later became President of Lufthansa from 1957 to 1978, and Erhard Vogt. The two men were both pilots for Deutsche Luft Hansa (DLH). In 1955, DLH merged with Junkers Luftverkehr to form Deutsche Lufthansa AG (abbreviated DLA). In 1960, DLA took over several other airlines including Adria Airways, Austrian Airlines, SAS Scandinavian Airlines System and Swissair.

Lufthansa's main hub is at Frankfurt Airport, and it has secondary hubs at Munich Airport as well as Düsseldorf Airport. The airline also maintains a domestic hub at Berlin Tegel Airport and an international hub at Munich Airport. It operates services to 18 domestic destinations and 197 international destinations in 78 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
