Owned and operated by the International Airlines Group, Aer Lingus is Ireland’s flag carrier. Headquartered at Dublin Airport in County Dublin, Aer Lingus is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance. Before it was privatised, Ryanair and the Irish government owned 29% and 25% of the airline’s shares respectively.

History

The history of this airline dates back to 1936 when the company was founded by the Irish government. The first flight operated between Dublin and Bristol in May 1936. A few years later, the flight started serving many cities across Europe. In 2006, the Irish government decided to privatise Aer Lingus. After many negotiations, the state and Ryanair decided to transfer all their shares to IAG (International Airlines Group). In 2015, IAG became the sole owner of Aer Lingus.

Fleet

Currently, Aer Lingus owns and operates aircraft from the airbus family. It has over 30 Airbus A320-200s and a few Airbus A330-300s. Earlier, the company owned many aeroplanes from the Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, and Lockheed families. It also owned Saab 340B and Vickers Viking.

Check-in procedure

You can check in for all Aer Lingus flights on your mobile. The check-in period starts 48 hours before the flight leaves. The closing time for online check-in depends on your destination. It can close between 2 and 8 hours before the departure. If you check-in at the airport, you must arrive 2-3 hours before the flight departs. Usually, it closes 40-60 minutes before the flight leaves. So, make sure you arrive early, especially during the holiday season.

Hand and Hold Luggage Allowance

Aer Lingus allows its passengers to bring one carry-on bag in the cabin. It must weigh either 7kg or less to fit under the seats or in the overhead storage compartment. The dimensions of the handbag must not exceed 48 x 33 x 20 cm. In addition, the airline allows one personal item. It can be a laptop bag, a pet carrier, a briefcase, and a handbag. The dimensions of this bag should not exceed 25 x 33 x 20 cm.

Class of Service, Seats, and Comfort

You can book your seats during check-in. The economy class aircraft has a seat pitch of 31-32 inches (for all aeroplanes) and a width of 18 inches. For extra room and comfort, you can fly in business class or pay extra to book seats with additional legroom. The business class seats are up to 22 inches wide and they lie flat.

Services onboard

The in-flight entertainment system allows users to enjoy an extensive range of movies, shows, and kid’s content. Each passenger gets a screen on the back of the seat. They offer Wi-Fi to all passengers and you can also connect your device to Wi-Fi. You can pre-order your meals or enjoy the in-flight menu. Unfortunately, the airline doesn’t allow travelling with pets. The only exception is the trained and certified dogs.
